Grilled Sourdough Pizza

Grilled sourdough pizza from scratch! Another adventure in grilling and sourdough baking in the backyard. I had a craving for pizza and Mountain Mike's wasn't going to do the trick. Grilled Sourdough PizzaEvery week I feed my sourdough and try to think of something else to try it on. Pizza seemed like a great idea and I had a simple pizza crust recipe to work with, so why not! It was as easy as I could imagine, make dough, flatten it out and add my favorite ingredients, cook and eat. No hiccups, no messes and no complaints ……. from the kids that is. Here it is in a step by step format as usual.

Mix ingredients, working in the flour until you have a soft dough.

If the dough gets too dry, add some more starter.

If you've used all the starter add a bit of water.

Once you've kneaded the dough, cover it and let rest for 1/2 hour. This lets the dough relax, so forming the pizza is easier. This recipe does not require the rising capabilities of sourdough, it just uses the taste of the starter.

Once the dough has rested, roll out into a flat round pie-like shape.

I used these pizza grids for my dough. It let the heat right into the dough to make a great crust!

Roll or press out you pizza dough. I found it easier to just press the dough into the shape I wanted. It should be about 3/8″ thick, of course you could make it thinner or thicker depending on your preferences.

Once the dough is formed you need to bake one side first. Set your grill to medium to high heat (you'll have to judge your own grill for this) Don't forget to use indirect heat, no burners on under the pizza dough. Cook for about 10 minutes on one side only.

Grilled Sourdough PizzaTake the pizza crust out and flip it over so the crusted side is on top. Time to add your favorite ingredients! First pizza sauce, cheese (I forgot) then what ever makes your mouth water.

I choose Canadian Bacon, peppers, mushrooms, tomato's and olives for one pizza and just a cheese topping for another (the boys).

Baking your pizza is only going to take 20 minutes or so. Keep and eye on it.

It was easy, fun and tasted great. This has convinced me that I can and will be doing many more pizza's in the barbecue this and every year.
